English Department

The English Department is one of the largest departments at our school.

English Theatre

Especially two theatre companies have regularly performed at our school, the White Horse Theatre and the Irish Actors Theatre company. Both are professional theatre companies and have specialised in the use of theatre as an aid in the teaching of English. The actors are all native speakers. Every year, these companies offer different plays that enable us to let every age group attend a theatre performance and check how much spoken English they really understand. The plays are always great fun and the actors do their best to entertain all pupils.

The average admission fee is five Euro and theatre groups will visit us if 150 pupils or more agree to come. Concerning a class, it’s either all or none at all. If you think you cannot manage to pay the admission fee, talk to your teacher and we will find a solution.

English Movies

Our school is lucky to have a highly motivated retired English teacher who is in charge of the local cinema in Salzgitter-Bad. A well-working co-operation with the “Cinema” makes it possible that our school can ask for an exclusive screening of movies in the English language. The average admission fee normally amounts to 3.50 Euro.

Foreign language certificates

For a couple of years now, pupils have been able to sign up for courses that lead to a language certificate in English. Adding a Cambridge Certificate to your language portfolio may help you in applications for a job or to meet university requirements. The courses are published in the “AG-Heft”. They will improve your language skills and prepare you for the testing method. Tests take place in Braunschweig or Hanover. You may sign up for the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) or the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). Go for it!

au pair / year abroad

If you are interested in a year abroad or in an au-pair experience, do visit the school library as all current information is on display there. If further information is needed and researching the Internet led you nowhere, ask your teacher for help.

Exchange programmes

We can currently offer two different exchange programmes:

• Exchange with Whitgift School in South Croydon, England.
  Who? – selected pupils in class 9 can participate.
• Exchange with Martin County, North Carolina, USA.
  Who? – selected pupils in year 10 can participate.

Which dictionary?

Do NOT buy a dictionary before you have read this piece of information:

• Do not buy a monolingual dictionary like the Dictionary of Contemporary English (DCE) or the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OAD). In tests, pupils will be supplied with monolingual dictionaries by our school.
• When you reach class 9, please buy „Das große Oxford Wörterbuch. Englisch-Deutsch/Deutsch-Englisch“ (Gebundene Ausgabe), published by Cornelsen-Verlag. Do not buy any other dictionary!!

It is not recommendable to buy this dictionary already in class 8 or earlier! As pupils will use this dictionary in Zentralabitur, it is quite important that everyone in a class has got the SAME dictionary of the SAME edition.
